Southern District Meeting July 2013

Southern District Meeting – 15th July 2013

We gathered on a very warm evening and considering we were well into the holiday period we had a good number of members in attendance, 23 in total including LAFD Past President Jeremy Field who gave a report on NAFD/LAFD activity.

A number of industry issues were discussed during the meeting the main topic being that of the new Death Certification Scheme. Proposed by Government for October 2014, Funeral Directors are now being contacted to see who would be willing to collect the fee required for the certificate. A meeting will soon be held between the NAFD the LGA and The Department of Health on this very subject. It is hoped that they will bring some suggestions to the table that will benefit Funeral Directors in exchange for doing this, such as not charging for an overrun service or arriving late at the Crematorium.

Our Guest Speaker for the evening was Michael Burke Operations Director for Kemnal Park Cemetery and Memorial Gardens in Sidcup. He spoke on the unique services that the Cemetery provides and the different types of graves and burial grounds available. Since its official launch in 2012 investors have spent over 1 million on landscaping alone. The Cemetery consists of private Gardens – of which 4 have been sold already, a park for the living – with swings for children and a natural brook that runs throughout.

From what Michael was telling us it was clear to see that the level of care and client service is at its utmost at Kemnal Park, the staff are committed to clients making each service personal to the individual family. They offer a 24/7 all year round service should a client need to speak or meet with someone to discuss a funeral, making every effort to meet any special requests.

The Cemetery’s care extends to Funeral Directors also with a lounge and seating area for use during funerals, hot and cold refreshments and even lunch if the 1pm slot is booked! Michael offered for anyone who would like to visit and see the spectacular Cemetery and Gardens for themselves the opportunity to come at any time.

After a good meeting, on what had been one of the hottest days of the year so far, a well deserved meal was enjoyed by members together with a much needed drink!

The date for the next meeting is Monday 14th October 2013 – 7:15 pm at The Hallmark (Aerodrome) Hotel, 680 Purley Way, Croydon CR9 4LT
