Fun for all at the 2017 London Association Banquet and Ball

Posted by on Apr 10th, 2017 in General News | 0 comments

Following the success of last year’s event, the Lancaster London Hotel again hosted the Ball.

The black and white themed décor, highlighted by stunning balloon displays, provided a perfect backdrop for the evening’s celebrations on 4th March.

London President James Gallagher was pleased to welcome guests from kindred associations: SAIF National President Paul Allcock (with wife Alison), BIFD national Chairman Darren Carpenter (with Tracey Hodgson), CFSMA Immediate Past President Darryl Smith (with wife Lesley) and BIE Southern Chairman Janni Plato-Howley.

NAFD President Jeremy Field and his wife Victoria were on “home turf” at the LAFD Ball, Jeremy having served for some years on its Executive Committee.

The guests are pictured with James and Vice-President Matthew Barber and his wife Lucy.

Following a delicious 4 course dinner, the glamourous party-goers joined a lively, and ultimately fairly competitive, auction for a framed drawing of a dancer by artist Darren Baker,
who was on hand to present both the picture and evidence of provenance. Funds raised from the sale benefitted the President’s nominated charity, St Clare’s Hospice.

LAFD were surprised and thrilled by Mr Baker’s generous donation of the beautiful picture. His work deservedly has attracted much critical acclaim, particularly his portrait of the Queen, unveiled in 2011.

The party continued in the usual lively London manner, as members filled the dance floor when showband “Mixed Feelings” took to the stage.

Toastmaster Neil Hunt ably oversaw proceedings, including a grand raffle draw with an array of superb prizes kindly donated by sponsors.

This year’s event was well supported by the very generous sponsorship of a number of suppliers and local members and we were pleased so many sponsors were able to join us at the party – THANK YOU all for contributing to a great evening.

Next year’s ball is being planned – don’t miss the highlight of 2018’s social calendar, look out for announcements on the website –

CertFAA Course N – New venture for LAFD

Posted by on Jan 19th, 2017 in General News | 0 comments

Not one, but two groups of students commencing CertFAA in the same week?   How?

In an exciting development for the popular course, for the first time LAFD Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration is being offered outside the London area.

This week, London students began their studies at our Hatton Garden venue and 12 Sussex students joined the parallel course at the new Burgess Hill venue.

Both groups are working towards the examination on 5th April.

Pictured on Tuesday are the Sussex students with Sussex Association President Andy Holter, NAFD President Jeremy Field and Course tutor David Hall ….

…. and on Wednesday, London students with LAFD President James Gallagher

Course N also will mark a milestone for the CertFAA – with the recent success of all Course M examinees, the number of holders of the qualification reached 186,
so the 200th successful candidate surely must be amongst these faces.

Christmas Elf ‘n’Safety – A timely reminder

Posted by on Dec 13th, 2016 in General News | 0 comments

It might seem obvious, but simple precautions sometimes are forgotten in the busy Christmas period:

Don’t let decorations obstruct smoke or heat detectors.

Don’t obstruct safety signage.

Check last year’s Christmas lights before using them again. Check that the plug and transformer are not damaged. Don’t forget to switch lights off when the workplace is empty.

Restrict electrical cables and extensions as far as possible. Tape wires to the floor or use cable protectors, or run them along walls.

If you want external lighting make sure that cables and connectors are in good condition, appropriate for external use and out of harm’s way.

Step ladders can be used to hang decorations, just make sure they are fit for purpose and secure. Don’t over reach when hanging the decorations or lights – move the steps closer.

Where there are motion sensitive security detectors be aware that some decorations will move in the air currents created by heating and ventilation systems. Many a late night or early morning false alarm has been down to moving decorations hanging from the office ceiling.

Autumn General Meeting 2016

Posted by on Nov 26th, 2016 in General News | 0 comments

The Autumn General Meeting was held on Thursday 10th November 2016 at Park Tower Hotel, Knightsbridge and followed by dinner enjoyed by 54 members and guests.

President James Gallagher reported the Association’s recent focus on education opportunities and the continuing difficulties for local members dealing with the West London Coroner Service.

Members were concerned about the continuing deterioration of service and staffing levels and the suspension of Senior Coroner Mr. C Inyama, pending completion of investigations by the Judicial Conduct Investigation Office. The Association was arranging a meeting with the Acting Senior Coroner and lead Council, to identify processes to enhance communication and learn of plans to improve the service.

Recent successful seminars were reported. The International Transportation seminar had been well received and would be repeated in 2017. An evening offering an update on relevant developments had been oversubscribed, highlighting the need to book early for these popular events.

The latest course of the Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration was underway and would conclude with the exam on 7th December; only a few places remained available for the next course in January. Following enquiries about the course from other regions, a pilot was to be run in Sussex in conjunction with that course.

President James reminded members that information about activities, events and other matters of interest could be found on the Association’s website.

Members received reports on annual Union negotiations, which  had concluded in the Summer, and on legislative developments and revised health and safety guidance.

The Treasurer informed members of the reduced precept income received from NAFD for the year, but was pleased to confirm the Association’s finances were healthy.

Updates on Western District and Southern District were provided.

Members were reminded that tickets were available for the Annual Banquet & Ball, on March 4th 2017 at the London Lancaster Hotel.

National President Jeremy Field provided members with news of developments at the national level and introduced the recently appointed NAFD CEO, Mandie Lavin, who gave her initial observations and outlined future plans.

The meeting concluded with a very informative presentation from Julian Atkinson of JC Atkinson Ltd on the new FFMA testing protocol.
