Southern District Annual General Meeting 2016

The AGM was held on Monday 18th April and included elections of the new officers. Anji Reeves handed her chain of office to new Chairman John Chester, of Funeral Partners

John will be ably assisted by Vice-Chairman Ben Walkling of Rowland Brothers and Barbara Ward will continue as Treasurer.

Unfortunately, although Mark Honeyman had had to relinquish the Secretary’s role following a relocation, no successor had been identified; however, subsequent to the meeting, Tony Pearson has agreed to undertake the duties of this vital position.

Offering her best wishes to John, Ben and Barbara, Anji warmly thanked all members for their encouragement and support throughout the year. Although stepping down, she intended to continue as an active member of the group and offered her experience and assistance to the new officers.

Jeremy Field, on behalf of LAFD President James Gallagher, echoed Anji’s congratulations to the new officers and was delighted to note the District’s active, flourishing membership.

The meeting was followed by an entertaining talk from Howard Hodgson, of Memoria, which was very well received and prompted lively discussion during the ensuing dinner.

Southern District AGM elects new officers

The Annual General Meeting of the Southern district (LAFD) was held at the Hallmark Hotel Croydon on 13th April.

Anji Reeves, of Rowland Brothers, was voted Chairman for 2015/16 at the AGM, succeeding Michael Thorpe of F.A. Albin & Son, who would support her as Vice-Chairman.

Mark Honeyman of Funeralcare became Secretary, with Barbara Ward of Dignity Plc continuing as Hon. Treasurer.

LAFD President Sarah Farrow said “Congratulations to Southern District (NAFD)’s new Chairman Anji Reeves, of Rowland Brothers. I am sure that the District Association will continue to thrive under the  guidance of its new officers.”

Southern District LAFD January meeting

The Southern District of the LAFD (formerly Croydon District Association) started the year with their quarterly meeting held at the Hallmark Hotel in Croydon.

Chaired by Michael T. Thorpe of F.A. Albin & Son in Sidcup the meeting was attended by 30+ colleagues from funeral businesses across South London.

The meeting discussed a range of issues relating to the profession at the moment.

Those gathered were fortunate to enjoy an address by Dr Brian Parsons (author of The Undertaker at Work 1900-1950 http://www.brianparsons.org.uk/undertaker.html) who talked on the subject of Croydon funeral directors circa 1937.

The meeting learned about the antics of Messrs T. Ebbutt and family renowned funeral directors in Croydon then and now.  The Ebbutt family were instrumental in the formative years of the National Association of Funeral Directors as well as the LAFD.  The inter war years saw the funeral profession coming to terms with the rise of cremation and decline in burials.

This followed Brian’s triumphant presentation to the Western District of the LAFD on funeral service in West London in the early 20th century.

Chairman Mickey said “Thanks to everyone that came and in particular to Brian Parsons for giving such an excellent and interesting talk!”

The next meeting will be at the Hallmark Hotel, Croydon on Monday 13 April 2015

Southern District (LAFD) AGM 30 June 2014

The quarterly meeting of the Southern district (LAFD) was held at the Hallmark Hotel Croydon on Monday 30th June

It was a good turn out with over 20 members in attendance.  It was the first meeting for Mickey Thorpe of FA Albin & Sons voted Chairman for 2014/15 at the AGM earlier in the year who took over from Richard Van Nes of Funeral Partners Ltd.  Rebekah Brown of Wandworth Council’s Bereavement Services team continues as Secretary and Barbara Ward of Dignity Plc takes over as Hon. Treasurer from Bill Langham formerly of WA Truelove & Son Ltd.

The main points addressed at the meeting included charges made to funeral directors by some cemeteries for lateness and at some cemeteries a penalty fee for changes made when booking the day of the funeral.

The Executive committee requested that members let them know when such cases are encountered, so that they can address them with the relevant authorities.  It would seem some NHS trusts are also charging a daily fee for looking after deceased patients once the green certificate has been issued.

Members were reminded of the change in law regarding the “cooling off period” for contracts which is now 14 days, this effects all funerals arranged away from the funeral directors’ premises.

LAFD President Sarah Harris said – “Congratulations to new chairman of the Southern District (NAFD) Mickey Thorpe of FA Albin & Sons.”

The next meeting of the Southern District (LAFD) will be held at the Hallmark Hotel Croydon on 6th October 2014
